THE END OF REASON

Vjeko Sager is an artist, philosopher, educator and curator. Best described as an architect of the mind, his work has been awarded, exhibited and represented in public and private collections throughout the world.

Vjeko is an artist who rejects comforting visions. He refuses simple answers proffered by figures of authority or dictated by common sense, believing that they numb us to the complexity of reality and blinds us to possibility. Instead, his art and his philosophy constantly push against the boundaries of knowability. The breaks in linearity in his art work signify the end of reason, and challenge us to discover what lies in the space beyond.

KOMA / Reset 2024International Art Festival, Brno, Czech Republic

Quo Vadis
Homine

What is
reset? A desire to return to normal? A desperate longing to move forward, or an
attempt to maintain a status quo and pretend nothing has happened?

In times
when humanity lost its ways, reset can take a multitude of meanings. It could be
an excuse to step outside the time, to sense a heartbeat and contemplate
fragility of life. To cling on to past, decide to stay in the present, or to
move towards the future. To reset means to listen the silence, breathe deeply
and stare into the abyss. To liberate ourselves from fears and take a leap into
unknown. To devote ourselves to a higher cause and let creativity save us from
the damnation. Reset may be our penalty or blessing, depending on which side of
reality we decide to exist.

Drawing as
Reset

To draw is
a leap into unknown, a release from fears and expectations. A journey without
return. A permit to make mistakes without feeling remorse. To surrender and
confess with every stroke. To scratch the surface, rip the paper, spill the ink
and change direction. To play games with the Universe. To dance like a child,
or a drop of water on the brush. To draw, is to be reborn through lines and
marks.

Thru the Trapdoor immersive drawing installation

Trapdoor Project invited interdisciplinary & multi-sensory artists to engage with the audience in both familiar and unexpected ways,
featuring 77 participants who each got an abandoned room in the basement to create individual projects and performances.
I decided to create an immersive artwork, by covering the space with charcoal drawings.

	diviNation7 days : duration performance

diviNation project was organized and supported by the CINEVOLUTION Media and patiently prepared through year-long discussions on Humanity, Art and Technology.

diviNation project was designed to question the role of the artist in times of permanent change. Situated in between private and public, artist are required to test and verify how technology influences habits, including creativity.

Ten meters tall diviNation tower was erected at the Minoru Plaza in front of the Richmond Cultural Centre. Tower included fully functional art studio at the top, supplied with live streaming audio & video equipment.

video :: opening + performance

7 days + endurance + performance
Day 1 // technology

First day started with TECHNOLOGY and electronic malfunctions, tangled and lost connections, incompatible platforms and conflicting standards. Technology proved to be a cruel mistress, asking for everything and giving nothing in return.

Day 2 // rationality

Second day was dedicated to NORMALITY and I tried to interact with visitors and occasional passerby’s. However, I soon discovered the inconvenient truth: Richmond is one of the most lifeless and dispassionate places on the planet Earth, populated with normals.
Day 3 // intellect

Third day was devoted to KNOWLEDGE and this feature allowed me to have fun playing with images and words. Intellectualism allowed me to be cool, distant and indolent. At the end of the day I realized knowledge may be responsible for the current state of affairs.
Day 4 // disobedience

Midway through the project I employed my ANARCHY persona to test the boundaries of freedom and censorship. My anarchy motto: “There is nothing to lose, because there is nothing important to keep”.
Day 5 // philosophy

I truly enjoyed making art in public, hidden away (and yet exposed) at the top of the tower. Nonetheless, I couldn’t produce anything of true value, as I was permanently distracted by the surroundings. So much for philosophy.
Day 6 // tribalism

Devoted to TRIBALISM, day six was an attempt to abandon my own ego and contemplate universal values. Ancient humans understood their role and position in the Universe and they used divination to navigate through the chaos. Today, we are left only with a chaos, as we abandoned divine nature long time ago.
Day 7 // spirituality

On Day 7, I decided to become a digital saint. I deleted my online presence and embraced digital silence.

Artistic statementBy Tia Sager

My father Vjeko Sager was born in Montenegro. He likes to think and study and he never liked the idea of becoming an artist, because he does not like art. However, despite his resolution, he studied art and became university professor in painting techniques. When we moved to Canada, my father was unhappy with his position, for not being recognized for his knowledge and skill. He does not like what he is and he decided to become somebody else. He divided himself into a four different people. This exhibition is a story about four artists whose plan was to destroy art.My father has put this exhibition together in order to ask a question concerning the present and future state of the arts. I told my father I believe in 2012 the art will finally disappear. My friends at school are not very interested in art history and they do not like to learn traditional skills. They like to make art with computers. Sometimes they like to use photography or just to rearrange objects. This is the reason why real art will vanish.

This is the story of four artists who caused misunderstanding and destruction of Modern art

Vigor Sagerovwas a daring and intelligent man. He was very sophisticated and precise. His passion was the mystery and unknown. His ambition was to find a way to represent the invisible. He believed in science, but also in mysticism. At one point, he recognized the other side of reality, called unfairness. He became a communist and fighter for human rights. Soon after, he was killed because an important person did not like his progressive ideas.

Visio Sagerinniwas a brave and adventurous spirit. He did not like the school, but he liked to make things. He was always looking for fun and adventure. Visio was not very serious about anything. He enjoyed spending time singing and drinking with friends. His passion was to make strange objects that could be used for many purposes. He was very interested to blend art with crafts, because he said, artalone was worthless. He lost his life because of his fearless nature, while trying to save the Bauhaus school from closing down.

Vicar Saggnerwas an intelligent person, but he never used his mind. Everything he did was in opposition to himself. He was not an optimist, but behaved like a pessimist. He desperately wanted to escape from everything and everybody. He ended up with destroying every possession and relationship. At the end, he had only his own body. His body became his artwork. He joined the Greenpeace and died under the mysterious circumstances while imprisoned at Victoria, B.C.

Vick Seger is twenty-five years old Canadian photojournalist. He is not particularly bright nor educated. He is somehow indifferent and indolent type of person. Typical Canadian. His only passion is photography. He likes taking pictures of everything. He was sent on the assignment to report war in former Yugoslavia. Shocked by what he saw there, he moved to the St Helena Island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, far away from everything.

I want to bring the island with me to Canada. I tied myself with a rope to the island. I closed my eyes and jumped into the sea. I swam for a very long time with my eyes closed. When I opened my eyes, I was still in Montenegro.
